Wiltshire Dairy Farm

Rainwater Harvesting for Livestock

We frequently receive enquiries about rainwater harvesting for farms, and this is a very good example of a successful application.

This West Country dairy farm decided to expand their herd in 2015 which required construction of new livestock buildings. This was an ideal opportunity to install a rainwater system to provide a supply of drinking water for 300 cattle.

Water is collected from the new barns and an existing adjacent building via a large Vortex filter into a 50,000-litre underground tank. This removes leaves and all other debris larger than 0.38mm. The water is then pumped to an intermediate break tank which is equipped with an automatic back-up from the mains water supply. From here the water is then pumped to several drinking troughs via fine sediment filters and an Ultra-Violet disinfection unit.
