What is rainwater harvesting

Rainwater harvesting collects rainwater from a building’s roof, filters it, and stores it for reuse. This reduces mains water use and stormwater run-off.

Why should I harvest rainwater?

Rainwater harvesting reduces the mains water you need to buy while helping conserve a precious resource. It can also reduce stormwater run-off during heavy rainfall, helping lower flood risk.

Can rainwater be collected from any roof surface?

Most roof surfaces are suitable, especially slate, tile and other smooth, non-absorbent materials. Flat, green or wooden roofs can reduce yield or discolour the water, so may limit its use.

How much maintenance is required?

Very little maintenance is required beyond cleaning the rainwater filter, a simple 5-minute task around every three months. The rest of the system is largely maintenance-free, though we recommend an annual check and can provide a maintenance service if required.

How much does a domestic system cost?

Most domestic systems cost around £2,300 ex VAT, including all required components and delivery to site. Because every system should be sized to suit your needs, we recommend a quick consultation to discuss the best option for your home.

Is it worth investing in a top-end system, or will a budget option do?

Rainwater systems work in broadly similar ways, but component quality can make a big difference to performance, maintenance and lifespan. We can help ensure you get the best value for money, with options that give cleaner water, lower running costs and easier upkeep.

Do you supply detailed instructions?

Yes, clear step-by-step illustrated instructions are provided, written for first-time installers without unnecessary technical language. Underground tank instructions are also sent with your order confirmation, so your builder can plan the groundwork.

Do I have to have a tank in my loft?

No, not at all! We can provide both direct (no header tank) and indirect (with header tank) systems – for advice on which system is suitable for you, feel free to give us a quick call or email us, we’re more than happy to help.

Can you help me find an installer?

We may be able to recommend installers familiar with our systems, but installation is straightforward for a competent builder or groundworker. The tank, filter and pipework are installed much like a septic tank, with a plumber or builder completing the internal connections.

How much space is required in my house?

The controls for your harvesting system can fit into the back of a standard kitchen cupboard. Alternatively they can simply be fitted to a wall in the utility room or somewhere similar; allow a space of about 50cm x 50cm.

Are there any hidden costs?

No, each system is supplied with the required fittings and detailed instructions. Site-specific items, such as internal plumbing and pipework from the downpipes to the tank, are normally supplied by your installer or plumber.

What areas of the country do you cover?

We can deliver anywhere in the UK, including offshore islands, subject to the appropriate delivery charges.

Are there any grants available?

There are currently no simple UK-wide grants for standard domestic rainwater harvesting systems, but funding may be available for farms, businesses, community projects or local resilience schemes. Availability changes regularly, so it is worth checking current grants before starting a project.

Why do your systems use submersible pumps?

Most of our systems use submersible pumps because they are quiet, efficient and allow flexible tank positioning. By pushing water rather than sucking it uphill, they perform well over longer distances and avoid indoor pump noise. The pumps we use are reliable, maintenance-free units.

What happens if something goes wrong?

We supply high-quality components and design our systems for easy maintenance and long service life. Our technical support team is available by phone Monday to Friday, with replacement parts, installer support and engineer visits available if required.

Do I need planning permission to install a rainwater system?

No, there are no regulations specific to rainwater harvesting but general building regulations and water regulations must be observed.

Can my water company charge me for water I collect?

No, rainwater collected from your roof and stored on your property is yours to use. We recommend a metered supply so you only pay for mains water used, and water companies will usually install a meter on request.
